QB Issue Resolution:

There’s no longer any need to make changes on your 2017 sales tax. The partial payment for the invoice in question will affect your current tax year since that’s when you received it.

For writing off the partially paid invoice, we’ll first need to create an account for it.

Here’s how:

  1. Move to the Gear icon, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click the New button. From the Account Type drop-down menu, select Expenses.
  3. From the Detail type drop-down menu, choose Bad Debts.
  4. In the Name field, enter Bad Debt or you can choose to enter a different name.
  5. Select Save and close.

What we need to do next is to create a product or service for the bad debt.

Here’s how:

  1. Hover your mouse on the Sales tab, then select Products and Services.
  2. Click the New button. then select Non-inventory.
  3. Enter Bad Debt in the Name field (or the name you entered on step 4 above).
  4. In the Income account field, select the Bad Debt expense account you created above.
  5. Make sure the Is taxable check box is clear.
  6. Click the Save and Close button.

Then we’ll have to create a credit memo for the debt.

Here’s how:

  1. Click the Plus (+) icon, then select Credit Memo.
  2. Fill up the form with the correct details.
  3. In the Product/Service field, select the Bad Debt item you created.
  4. Enter the Amount of the unpaid invoices as a positive number.
  5. Select the Save and close button.

Lastly, we need to apply the credit memo to the partially paid invoice.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Plus (+) icon, then select Receive Payment.
  2. Fill up the form with the correct details.
  3. Under the Outstanding Transactions section, select the invoices to write off.
  4. Under the Credits section, select the credit memo you created.
  5. Make sure the Amount Received is 0.
  6. Select the Save and close button.
