QB Issue Resolution:
Its usually really fast to reconcile if you are downloading transactions. I’ll describe it here and let me know if this doesn’t help.
Downloaded transactions, when added to the register, get the light checkmark for “cleared”. They will be on your bank statement – that’s why they are marked cleared. They don’t get the dark checkmark, which means “reconciled”. You can click on the checkmark in the register and force them to be reconciled but you normally should not.
When you begin a reconcile of a bank account, you’ll see all the cleared and uncleared transactions for that account. The ones you have downloaded are”cleared” and will have a checkmark next to them. This means that they are on your bank statement – you know that because you downloaded then from the bank. If you download regularly in most cases _all_ the transactions are cleared already.
Make sure “Hide transactions after statement end date” is checked on. This way you won’t see transactions that you’ve downloaded that are after the statement.
Usually when I do this the whole account balances out and the Difference is zero – I usually don’t have to do anything to reconcile a statement except enter the end balance and hit the Reconcile button. I just did several years worth on over ten different bank accounts and it was mostly just entering in those ending balances (except where i had screwed up… then it takes longer of course).
One possible cause of confusion may be that the checkmarks in the reconcile window are dark. The checkmarks in the reconcile window just mean “cleared” – same as the light checkmarks in the register.
At the bottom of the reconcile window there is also the Mark All and Unmark All buttons. Unmark all will clear all of the transaction in the reconcile window. Sometimes you just have to go through line by line on the statement and click each transaction as you see it. (For instance if the final total is off and you have no idea why). In that case click on Unmark All and all the cleared checkmarks will be gone. Then you can go through clicking line by line.
Some other reconcile tricks: you can filter at the top to search for things. You can click on the headers to sort by column, ascending or descending. I find sorting by amount to be helpful sometimes. By default it is sorted by date.
Hope this helps. Let me know any questions you have here and I’ll answer them.
