It just needs to be available before it is needed for a next step.

You need to Build the subassembly, or buy it. The Build will use the components listed in the Assembly’s BOM, for that date. The system doesn’t consider if this is the thing you stock to sell or to use later, in a group item or another assembly. There is No difference, once it is in stock. And the Final Assembly is a Build or Buy activity, the same as the Subassembly, because there is no difference. Subassembly or not is how you listed the Assembly in the BOM of another Assembly.

It isn’t clear if you are looking at the Items List, Nesting these, and thinking that is Functional. That is an Outline Structure that allows you to Organize the list for your viewing clarity. It isn’t Functional.
