QB Issue Resolution:
A flat car allowance is taxable income to the employee whereas mileage reimbursement that does not exceed the federal rate for deductions is not.
Since this does not sound like mileage reimbursement then it is taxable and you do run it through payroll like a bonus check and reverse calculate gross from net. Your payroll program may or may not have this handy feature.
Rate in 2017 dropped from 2016. It is 53.5 cents per mile. If your employee turns in a mileage request for 10,000 miles you could reimburse $5,350 and it would be non-taxable or you could pay $10,000 and $5350 would be non-taxable and the balance taxable. But this is ONLY if they turned in a lieage request.
