QB Issue Resolution:
open a sales order, after turning them on in preferences if you need to, Menu Edit>Preferences>Sales>Company tab check mark sales orders are active
click the formatting tab, click customize data layout
change the name of the sales order to Pro Forma Invoice and make what other changes you need
use that template. sales orders (pro forma invoice in this case) do not post to the accounts, when ready make your final edits to the sales order and convert to an invoice
any invoice template you use, no matter what you call it, posts to the accounting
