QB Issue Resolution:

A pending invoice does not have the ability to show backordered or the number of items remaining to be shipped to. This is for the reason that it can’t be linked to another invoice.

In your case, it looks like the Purchase Order that you’re mentioning is actually a Sales Order from your customers. If this is correct, this feature is only available in Premier, Accountant and Enterprise Solutions version of QuickBooks.
