QB Issue Resolution:
Open the chart of accounts. Right Click and choose Customize Columns. Bring Description into your view.
But, I think you want to Organize, not Describe.
Make a New Expense account and name it Fixed Costs. Now, see those little handles to the left of every name on the Chart of Accounts? Put the mouse here, grab one, drag it under and Indent to the right = demoted to Subaccount of Fixed. Or, Edit and Checkmark “Subaccount Of” for Fixed.
Organize that list. This allows you to Collapse and Expand your P&L, for example.
Now, make a new “parent” for Variable and Organize subaccounts here, such as payroll and supplies.
“somehow need to split payroll taxes between COGS for field labor and Fixed Expenses for Clerical. ”
How do you use QB for running Payroll? QB Desktop payroll has the Payroll Items, which flow data to your accounts. There is only One “Employer Medicare” for instance.
Instead of doing all of this work, have you considered turning on Class Tracking and using it? This allows you to leave the account structure simple. Then, you Class Track, as an additional cross-references. That means Labor can be Class Tracked and you set your preferences to Class Track per earnings Item and to Class (and even Job) track Employer expense for taxes. And now you can run P&L by Class. Your Classes would be, for instance, Direct, Indirect, and Overhead or Fixed and Variable. Or, Overhead is Parent Class; Fixed and Variable can be Subclass, just as you are learning about Subaccounts.
