QB Issue Resolution:

As you’ve discovered, connecting your bank directly to QuickBooks requires that you have login information, so you won’t be able to do it that way. Not to worry, if you still have the transactions saved as a .CSV, .QFX, .QBO, or .OFX document, there’s another way you can manually bring them into the program so that your books are updated and balanced.

 

To start, manually create the account in your chart of accounts. Follow these steps.

  1. Click the Accounting tab in the left menu.
  2. Make sure you’re on the Chart of Accounts section.
  3. Click the New button in upper right corner of the page.
  4. Choose Bank at the account type and fill in the Detail Style and Name as you’d like (e.g. a Chequing account for CIBC).
  5. Verify all other necessary details.
  6. Save and Close.

Now that the bank is set up, you can use the bank file to import the data.

  1. Click the Gear icon in the top right of the screen.
  2. Select Import Data.
  3. Choose Bank Data.
  4. Browser for the file in question, then click Next.
  5. Choose the QuickBooks Account, which would be the bank account just created.
  6. Select Next.
  7. Follow the steps to map the document to QuickBooks.
  8. Select the transactions you’d like to import.

If you don’t have a downloaded file of transactions from the closed account, I suggest entering in the transactions manually or creating a .CSV document then following the process above to bring in the information. Otherwise, it’s ideal to speak with an accountant to learn the best way to record the information you need in your account.
