QB Issue Resolution:

You are not doing anything wrong. I teach manual payroll as part of my QB and Payroll class, in fact.

To get the functionality for using Paycheck Details to make your entries and running reports, you can set the file to Manual Payroll. That literally means No Tax Calculations. As you point out, you are not paying for the Tax table subscription. You can set up some items for your purposes, but you CANNOT expect the provided Tax Items to calculate, because you are not paying for that function.

I am hoping you got some guidance for this and are not paying yourself as payroll for anything other than as a Corporate employee.

Payroll is not something to teach yourself without the support of a CPA.
