1096 Form Basics

Form 1096 is an annual summary document that reports the totals of all 1099 forms you file with the IRS for a specific tax year. You must submit Form 1096 to the IRS whenever you file paper copies of 1099s; it is not required if you file electronically.

To prepare and print Form 1096 in QuickBooks Online:

  1. Select Expenses (or Vendors) in the left navigation menu.
  2. Select Prepare 1099s at the top right.
  3. Verify that your vendor information and payment amounts are correct for the tax year.
  4. Select the Print 1096 button.
  5. Choose to print a sample for alignment or the actual form, then follow the on-screen prompts to print.

Note: If you order pre-printed 1099 forms from Intuit, a 1096 form is included. Ensure you use the correct version of the form for the tax year you are filing.
