How to fix Banking Error 187 in QuickBooks Online
Banking Error 187 in QuickBooks Online means your bank rejected a security question answer or a one-time passcode while the connection refreshed. The fix is almost always the same: clear every waiting prompt on your bank’s own website, then update the connection from the Banking page in QuickBooks.
Confirm your bank login first
Open your bank’s website in a private or incognito window, where an autofilled password cannot hide the problem. Then work through the common causes:
- Confirm your username and password still work, especially if either was changed recently.
- Answer any security question or one-time passcode prompt the bank has waiting, and save it.
- Accept new terms and conditions, and finish any profile update the bank is requiring.
- Dismiss account alerts and messages, because some banks block outside connections until these are cleared.
Why does the bank ask again?
Your bank sees every QuickBooks refresh as a fresh sign-in from an app it does not fully recognize. A wrong or late answer to the extra proof it demands comes back as Error 187.
A new prompt can appear at any time. Banks tighten their verification rules after policy changes, so a stored answer that worked last month can fail today.
A password change at the bank has the same effect. QuickBooks keeps offering the previous password until you re-enter it, and the bank reads that as a failed attempt.
Update the connection in QuickBooks
Once the bank’s site shows nothing waiting, refresh the link from the QuickBooks side:
- Open the Banking page from the Settings gear in QuickBooks Online.
- Select the account showing the error.
- Choose Update, or the sign-in prompt if the account was disconnected.
- Re-enter your credentials, then answer each security question exactly as you first set it.
- Enter any code the bank sends by text or email right away, because these codes expire within minutes.
- Save, then run one more update to confirm the error has cleared.
Type each answer rather than pasting it. A pasted answer can carry invisible characters that fail the check even when the wording looks right.
If the error keeps returning
Some failures sit on the bank’s side and only need time:
- Wait a few hours and update again; scheduled bank maintenance routinely blocks refreshes for a day.
- Recheck the bank’s website the next day, since some banks stage new agreements over several sign-ins.
- Try another browser if the verification window will not open at all.
If your login works on the bank’s site and the error still appears after 24 to 48 hours, the connection needs attention from Intuit. Intuit publishes QuickBooks Online and runs its own support desk, and only that team can inspect the link between its servers and your bank. Have the bank’s name, the error number, and the date the failures started ready when you make contact.
Keep your records current meanwhile
The workaround while the feed is down is a manual import:
- Download a CSV or Web Connect file from your bank’s website, covering only the missing dates.
- Open the Banking page in QuickBooks Online and choose its upload option.
- Follow the mapping prompts, then match and categorize the transactions as usual.
Keeping to the missing dates avoids duplicates. If the bank resends overlapping days after the link recovers, QuickBooks Online will suggest matches you can accept or exclude.
