Connecting Bank Accounts and Troubleshooting Connection Issues
Connecting your bank and credit card accounts to QuickBooks Online lets you automatically download transactions, saving time and reducing errors. This article covers how to link an account and what to do if the connection fails.
Connect your bank account to QuickBooks Online
- Go to Transactions, then select Bank transactions (or Banking).
- Select Link account (or Add account) in the upper right.
- Enter the name of your financial institution and select it from the list.
- On the bank’s login screen, enter the same user ID and password you use on the bank’s website. If your bank requires additional security steps (for example, a one‑time passcode), follow the prompts.
- After logging in, you’ll see a list of accounts available for connection.
- For each account you want to connect, tick the box beside it.
- From the QuickBooks Account dropdown, choose the matching account from your chart of accounts. If the account doesn’t exist yet, select + Add new to create it.
- Select Connect (or Link). QuickBooks will start downloading your transactions.
- When the setup completes, select I’m finished (or close the window). Your transactions appear under the For review tab.
Troubleshoot connection issues
If you can’t connect a bank account, try the following:
- Check your login credentials – Make sure the user ID and password are correct by signing in directly on the bank’s website. Watch for extra spaces or changed passwords.
- Verify your bank’s status – Some banks have scheduled maintenance or temporary issues. Try again later, or check your bank’s service page.
- Multi‑factor authentication (MFA) – If your bank uses MFA, QuickBooks will prompt you to enter a code during setup. Ensure you have access to the phone or authenticator app that receives the code.
- Bank not listed – Not all financial institutions support automatic feeds. If your bank doesn’t appear in the search, you can manually import transactions via CSV (go to Transactions > Bank transactions, then select Upload from file).
- Duplicate or old connections – If a previous connection attempt is still pending, you may need to cancel it. Go to Transactions > Bank transactions, select the bank tile, and choose Edit ✎ then Disconnect this account before reconnecting.
- Browser issues – Clear your browser cache, or try an incognito/private window. Ensure you aren’t blocking pop‑ups. Supported browsers are Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari.
- Bank security restrictions – Some banks block third‑party access. Contact your bank to confirm they allow data sharing with QuickBooks. You might need to enable a specific setting in your online banking profile.
