Will QuickBooks Online assign account numbers to the Chart of Accounts?

QuickBooks Online doesn’t automatically assign account numbers to your Chart of Accounts, as numbering systems vary by business. However, you can easily enable account numbers and assign them yourself to organize your accounts.

When you use account numbers, your Chart of Accounts and reports will sort numerically first, then alphabetically.

Turn on account numbers

  1. Select the Settings gear icon.
  2. Select Account and settings (or Company Settings).
  3. Select the Advanced tab.
  4. In the Chart of accounts section, select the Edit (pencil) icon.
  5. Check the boxes for Enable account numbers and Show account numbers.
  6. Select Save, then Done.

Assign account numbers

  1. Select the Settings gear icon, then Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the account you want to number.
  3. In the Action column, select Edit.
  4. Enter the account number in the Number field (account numbers can be up to 7 digits).
  5. Select Save and Close.

Repeat these steps for each account you wish to number.
