How to Pay Employees After Their Leaving Date

If you need to process a one‑off payment (such as a bonus or final settlement) for an employee after their leaving date, follow these steps in QuickBooks Online Payroll.

The tax code must be changed to 0T W1 (week 1) or 0T M1 (month 1) so that the employee is taxed on an emergency basis. The National Insurance category letter usually remains the same, unless the payment is a genuine redundancy payment – if it is, you may need to use a different NI letter (e.g. A for redundancy). Contact HMRC if you are unsure.

Step 1: Make the employee active again
