Does QuickBooks Online have a service discontinuation policy?

QuickBooks Online is not affected by Intuit’s service discontinuation policy. That policy exists to retire older QuickBooks Desktop versions, and a cloud subscription product has no version to retire. There is nothing to upgrade, reinstall, or repurchase each year; the build you sign into is always the current one.

The Desktop sunset policy

Service discontinuation, often called sunsetting, is an Intuit policy that applies to QuickBooks Desktop. Intuit retires each Desktop version on a schedule, roughly three years after release, and a retired version loses its connected services.

The program itself keeps opening, so a company file remains usable for basic bookkeeping. What ends is everything that talks to Intuit’s servers: payroll, online banking, payments, and official support for that version.

Does QuickBooks Online expire?

Not the way Desktop versions do. There is no QuickBooks Online 2023 or 2025 to fall behind on. Every subscriber runs the same current build, and Intuit applies changes on its servers.

What can end is the subscription. If you cancel, Intuit keeps your data available in read-only form for a limited period. You can export reports and lists during that window, so do it before the window closes. Keep the subscription active and nothing lapses.

Services that stay active

Because the product never ages out, the services attached to it continue for as long as your subscription is current:

None of this depends on installing an update, because there is no update to install.

If a discontinuation notice arrives

Subscribers sometimes receive a discontinuation email and assume it applies to QuickBooks Online. Usually it does not, and the product named in the notice settles the question.

Check whether the message refers to a Desktop version still installed somewhere, or to a payroll or payments add-on attached to one. Intuit has also retired Desktop product lines over the years, and notices about those concern Desktop only. If the email names no product you actually run, treat it cautiously, because phishers imitate this kind of message.

Moving from a retired version

Many readers reach this page because a Desktop version lost its services and QuickBooks Online is the destination. The main work is the company file, which has to move from the Desktop install into the online product.

Intuit provides an import path that brings a Desktop company file into QuickBooks Online, and it works from recent Desktop releases. Files from older versions may need upgrading to a supported release first, or a direct conversion. We run a QuickBooks Desktop to Online conversion service that covers files too old for the import tool. Wherever possible we work from a copy, so the original file stays untouched.

Once the file is in, the question stops recurring. The subscription renews, Intuit keeps the product current, and there is no version number left to retire.
