How to Track Sales for Commissions

QuickBooks Online doesn’t calculate commissions automatically, but you can track sales by salesperson or rep using Class tracking. Once you set this up, you can run reports to see sales totals and calculate commissions outside of QuickBooks.

Turn on Class tracking

  1. Select the Settings gear icon.
  2. Select Account and settings.
  3. Select the Advanced tab.
  4. In the Categories section, select the edit (pencil) icon.
  5. Turn on Track classes.
  6. Select Save, then Done.

Set up your salespeople

  1. Select the Settings gear icon.
  2. Select All lists, then choose Classes.
  3. Select New to add a class for each salesperson or sales rep.
  4. Name the class (for example, enter the salesperson’s name) and select Save.

Assign salespeople to transactions

When you create an invoice, sales receipt, or other transaction, fill in the Class field with the specific salesperson’s name.

Run reports to calculate commissions

To see how much each person sold, run a report filtered by class:

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. Search for and open the Sales by Class Detail or Profit and Loss by Class report.
  3. Review the totals for each salesperson (class).
  4. Use the totals from the report to manually calculate the commission amounts.

You can then pay your salespeople using a regular expense or check transaction, entering the calculated commission amount.
