Update the Credit Card for a QuickBooks Online Subscription
To update the credit card used for your QuickBooks Online subscription, sign in as an admin and change the payment method in your account billing settings. If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, update the card in that store instead. Keeping the card current helps avoid a failed renewal payment when the subscription renews.
Admin permission is required
Only a primary or company admin can view and edit billing details for a QuickBooks Online company. A standard user does not see the billing controls, so an admin needs to make the change.
Have the new card details ready before you start. The billing address and ZIP code you enter should match what the card issuer has on file.
Update the card in QuickBooks
- Sign in to QuickBooks Online as the primary or company admin.
- Open Settings, then select Account and settings.
- Select Billing & Subscription.
- In the Payment method section, choose Edit.
- Enter the new card number, expiration date, security code, and billing ZIP code, then save.
The card you save becomes the payment method for future charges. Intuit stops using the previous card once the new details are saved.
If you do not see the Edit option, check whether you are signed in as a standard user or whether the subscription is billed through an app store. For a subscription billed directly by Intuit, only an admin account shows the edit control.
Outstanding balances are charged later
Changing the card does not immediately settle an existing past-due balance. Intuit charges that amount to the new card on the next scheduled billing date. If you want the balance collected sooner, contact Intuit Support.
QuickBooks Online billing works on the normal cycle rather than retrying the moment a card is updated.
Can I switch to bank payments?
The Payment method section may also let you add or switch to a bank account direct debit, sometimes called ACH or pre-authorized debit. Availability varies by region and account. If the option is not visible, contact Intuit Support to ask whether bank payment is available for your subscription.
What about app store purchases?
If you originally subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, the card on file is stored with Apple or Google, not in QuickBooks Online. Open the subscription settings in the app store account that made the purchase and update the payment method there. Check there first if your QuickBooks billing page shows a note that the subscription is managed by the store.
After you update the app store payment method, the change applies to the next billing attempt from that store. QuickBooks Online receives the payment from Apple or Google and does not manage the underlying card.
