Report download fails with error message
If you see a “download failed” error when exporting reports in QuickBooks Online, a temporary browser or network issue is usually the cause. Try these steps in order.
Clear your browser’s cache and cookies for QuickBooks Online
Most download failures happen when cached data becomes corrupt or outdated. Clearing only the data tied to QuickBooks Online avoids signing you out of other services.
- In your browser, open the settings or preferences.
- Find the section for privacy, history, or site data.
- Choose to clear cached images/files and cookies specifically for
qbo.intuit.com. (In Chrome, go tochrome://settings/content/all, search forqbo.intuit.com, and delete data. In Edge, go toedge://settings/content/cookies, view all cookies and site data, and remove the QuickBooks entries. In Firefox, open the padlock icon next to the address bar, then click “Clear Cookies and Site Data.”) - After clearing, fully close your browser, reopen it, and log back into QuickBooks Online.
- Try downloading the report again.
Use a private/incognito window
Private browsing skips extensions and cached data that might interfere. Open a new private window, sign in to QBO, and run the report export there. If it works, an extension or your regular cache is causing the problem.
Check for pop-up blockers and browser extensions
Report exports can trigger a new tab or download prompt that a pop‑up blocker or ad‑blocker may stop. Temporarily allow pop‑ups for qbo.intuit.com and disable any ad‑blocking or script‑blocking extensions, then retry.
Try a different supported browser
QuickBooks Online works best with the latest versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Apple Safari. Switching to another browser often isolates browser‑specific issues.
Improve your network connection
If your connection is unstable, the report file may fail to generate completely. Try these steps:
- Restart your router and modem: unplug them, wait 30 seconds, plug them back in, and let them fully reboot.
- Restart your computer.
- If you’re on Wi‑Fi, try a wired connection temporarily.
After each change, log in and attempt the report export again. If the error persists across multiple browsers, devices, and networks, contact QuickBooks Online support for deeper troubleshooting.
