QB Issue Resolution:
The 1234567-8 format you’ve described above is referring to a State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) account number.
It could be the number you saw in the MyTax Illinois website is a Withholding Account Number. This might be the reason it doesn’t fit the 1234567-8 format in QuickBooks.
As a sole proprietor, you’re entitled to all profits and are responsible for all your business’ liabilities. If you have no employees, you’re required to file an annual return and pay estimated taxes quarterly. To learn more about the taxes for this business type, read through this article: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/r/professional/tax-brackets-know-where-you-stand-as-a-sole-proprietor/.
However, if you have employees, SUI taxes may vary depending on your state. With this, I’d first suggest contacting directly to IL state tax agency. They will inform you about your SUI account number for your business.
You can also register online to your MyTax Illinois account. Then, it will be assigned to your registered business within 24 business hours. After that, log back in to the website to retrieve your newly assigned account number. For more details about this, see the Employer Registration section through this article: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1458626.
Once you already have the account number, you can enter it by performing the steps below:
- Go to the Gear icon at the upper right.
- Select Payroll Settings under Your Company.
- Under Taxes, choose State Taxes – IL.
- In the State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) Setup section, enter the IL Account Number.
- Click OK.
I’ve attached a screenshot below to show you the last two steps.
