QB Issue Resolution:
When you change the SUI rate during the quarter, QB will try to correct the YTD SUI amount for each Employee on the next paycheck. This works pretty well when the new rate is higher than the old rate.
When your new rate is lower than the old rate, it is not so easy. In that case if you have already over calculated the SUI amount, QB will not make a negative amount correction. The next paycheck may show 0.00 as the SUI amount, but if ,say, $50 was already over calculated, QB will not make a -$50 correction. Once the YTD amounts have “caught up” with the SUI tax already calculated, QB will then begin calculating the SUI again (if the annual limit has not been met).
For your Salaried Employees, if they had already met the annual limit amount before you made the rate change, then QB won’t make any correction at all. It sounds like that may be what happened. For those Employees you can make payroll liability adjustments, so that your Q1 SUI Liability in the “Pay Taxes and Other Liabilities” will be correct.
Keep in mind, when you create you Q1 report, the amount due will be calculated on the report as if the new lower rate was used for the entire quarter (so the report should be correct). However that amount may not agree with what you see in the “Pay Taxes and Other Liabilities” window, since that amount represents the actual SUI that was calculated on each paycheck (some at the old rate and some at the new rate). If you make payroll liability adjustments as needed, then the amounts should agree.
