alphabetical order: Accounts are not showing in alphabetical order in any report (P&L, Balance Sheet) nor in the Chart of accounts itself.

Resorting your chart of accounts should fix this.  Pick Re-sort List from the Account button at the bottom of the chart of accounts.

it is sorted in character sequence

add numbers to the front of the item is one work around, but realize they will sort

1, 11, 12, 13 ….. 2, 20, 21 etc

character not alpha/numeric
