attorney: I have paid a retainer to an attorney. How do i record this to show as a prepaid expense on the balance sheet, and then reduce it as the attorney sends me invoices against this retainer.

This is my recommended procedure:

Code the check to PrePaid Legal Fees (current asset type account).

When you receive the bill, enter the bill for the total amount to Professional Fees expense account.

Then, issue a credit for the same vendor name, using PrePaid Legal Fees and apply it to the bill.
