Backup File: My old iMac crashed and I’m attempting to open a .QBB file with QuickBooks 2018 for Mac but I’m getting, “There was a problem converting the file”.

As far as I know, there is no 2018 for Mac (last version was 2016 until the 2019 comes out).  It sounds like you have the Windows version running on your Mac under Parallels or something similar.  A QBB file is definitely a Windows version backup file.  Can you confirm?
