The Qty Needed will be 0 until you put the Qty to Build, bottom right.

build assembly: Track quantity of build assembly items

Right click the item and run a Quick Report.

Run the Stock Status by Item report and double-click an item’s Total on Hand.

The first report will include Purchase Orders, if you order them, too. Otherwise, these are pretty much the same info and what you are asking about.
