open the check register and click the button near the bottom left that says “Sort by”

We figured it out.  She was pressing the “Save” button on the toolbar at the top rather than using the Save & Close or Save & New buttons.

For some reason intuit ONLY allows US versions of QBO to export to desktop, the function is not available for non-US versions

and to be truthful, you are better off without it.
