I know that going from QuickBooks online to a QB desktop version can be quite the trek.

No. You have to have a quicken file that is from a version year the same or older than your QB version year.

I no longer do this nor recommend it at all. Quicken allows all sorts of things QB does not, so it makes a mess of the data, even if you get it converted, and you cannot clean out this mess entirely.

There is a conversion process that several have tried. It seldom works and when it does few are happy with the results. The best option is starting a new file from scratch and entering historical data.
