they are not income, though they normally post to a sales income discount account, the posting is a debit which lowers overall income.  It is called a contra account.

ie

sales income 3,000.00  (credit entry in accounting)
>>sales income discount 250.00 (debit entry in accounting)

gross income 2,750.00

credit entry: For some reason my linked American Express account is showing the transactions in the wrong field. Charges are payments and payments are charges.

QB does what the import of data says to do, sorry to say the problem is with the data from amex.

They have credits and debits reversed in your data stream. and you will have to either reformat the import file or work with them.
