Income: What category should I put credit card refunds when I return a purchased item. Quickbooks wants to auto categorize it under income but it is not income.

Assuming both the purchase and return happens in the same fiscal year, it really makes no difference if it posts as other income, on the P&L that other income would be reduced by that expense.

You need to enter the total amount of the income because you also need record the business expenses.

Income: I travel for work and some of the expense is reimbursed. How do I make sure that when I receive payment it is recorded as income and reimbursement. How do I do this?

It’s important that you enter your transactions properly to avoid any confusion in the future. I want to make sure we’re on the same page. How are you paying yourself? Is the reimbursement coming from a different company?

You can not do that in the very limited QBSE, there is no class function

QBSE is designed to report along the lines of the schedule C, if you own rental property you will not be using a schedule C instead you use a schedule E.

Income: Can you use accounts receivable to track pledges

You can by issuing an invoice, but in QB an invoice is a final sale which impacts on your income

 

a pledge is a promise, nothing more, and IMO should be entered on an estimate.  Estimates are non posting so if it falls through, no impact on the financials
