Error
Fix common errors and unexpected behavior in QuickBooks Online
If QuickBooks Online isn’t performing as expected—such as shutting down unexpectedly, displaying error messages, or failing to sync—there are a few standard troubleshooting steps we recommend. Since QuickBooks Online is a cloud-based service, many issues are resolved by refreshing your browser connection or clearing temporary data.
This guide covers how to resolve common performance errors and sync issues.
Browser and system troubleshooting
Most unexpected behaviors in QuickBooks Online (such as random shutdowns or “configuration” errors) are caused by temporary internet files or browser cache conflicts. Unlike desktop versions, we do not use “reboot.bat” files or local file repairs.
To resolve these issues, try the following:
- Clear your browser cache and cookies: This removes old data that might be causing conflicts.
- Try an incognito or private window: This disables extensions that might be interfering with QuickBooks.
- Chrome: Press
Ctrl+Shift+N(Windows) orCommand+Shift+N(Mac). - Edge: Press
Ctrl+Shift+P(Windows) orCommand+Shift+P(Mac).
- Chrome: Press
- Check your internet connection: Ensure you have a stable connection. Intermittent connectivity can cause the app to stop responding.
- Use a supported browser: For the best experience, use the latest version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
Resolving data and export issues
If you encounter errors when saving transactions or exporting reports, follow these steps.
Errors when saving transactions
If you see an error message when trying to save an invoice or make changes, it may be a temporary glitch.
- Refresh the page: Sometimes simply reloading the browser window resolves the issue.
- Check for browser extensions: Ad blockers or password managers can sometimes interfere with form data. Try disabling them or using an incognito window.
- Verify your data: If the issue persists, ensure the data you are entering is formatted correctly (e.g., no special characters in unusual fields).
Exporting reports to Excel
If you receive an error when exporting a report to Excel, or the option is grayed out:
- Check your Excel version: Ensure you are using a locally installed, desktop version of Microsoft Excel (Excel 2010 or newer recommended).
- Browser limitations: “Click-to-Run” or web-based versions of Office may not support the direct integration required for exporting. If you are using Excel Online, try downloading the report as a CSV file instead, and then opening it in Excel.
- Pop-up blockers: Ensure your browser allows pop-ups from
quickbooks.intuit.com, as the export sometimes opens in a new window.
Copying and pasting data
If you receive an “Overflow” error when pasting data from Excel into QuickBooks:
- Check value limits: Ensure the numbers you are pasting do not exceed the maximum character or value limits for the specific field (e.g., the price field).
- Format cells: In Excel, ensure the cells are formatted as “Number” or “Currency” rather than “Text” before copying.
- Paste in batches: If you are pasting a large amount of data, try pasting smaller sections at a time to isolate the problematic row.
Sync Manager and third-party app errors
If you see an error regarding “Intuit Sync Manager” or file paths (e.g., C:\Users\...\Intuit\SyncManager), please note that Intuit Sync Manager is a utility used by QuickBooks Desktop, not QuickBooks Online.
If you are seeing this message while using QuickBooks Online:
- Verify your product: You may have installed the QuickBooks Desktop Sync Manager by mistake or be running a desktop version of the software. QuickBooks Online syncs automatically via the cloud and does not require a local Sync Manager tool.
- Disable Desktop Sync: If you have QuickBooks Desktop installed, you may need to disable the Sync Manager from starting up automatically to stop the error messages.
If the issue relates to a specific third-party app connected to QuickBooks Online:
- Go to Settings (gear icon) and select Apps.
- Find the app and check its status.
- Disconnect and reconnect the app to refresh the authorization token.
