Fix browser problems in QuickBooks Online
Blank screens, missing buttons, and transactions that refuse to save in QuickBooks Online are usually browser problems, not accounting problems. The product runs entirely in your browser, so a stale cache file, an outdated browser, or a misbehaving extension can break screens that worked yesterday. A short round of browser maintenance fixes most cases.
Clear cache and cookies
Your browser keeps local copies of a site’s files so pages load faster. Intuit updates QuickBooks Online continuously, so those copies soon go stale, and the browser ends up mixing old code with new. The result is a blank report, a form that will not save, or a half-drawn page.
Clearing the stored data forces a fresh download from Intuit’s servers:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete on Windows, or Command + Shift + Delete on a Mac. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge all open their clearing dialog with this shortcut.
- Set the time range to All time.
- Select cached images and files and cookies and other site data.
- Choose Clear data, then reload QuickBooks Online and sign back in.
Test in a private window or another browser
A private or incognito window runs without your extensions and without most stored data. If QuickBooks Online behaves there, the fault sits in your normal browser profile, not in your books. Chrome and Edge open one with Ctrl + Shift + N (Command + Shift + N on a Mac); Firefox uses Ctrl + Shift + P. Then disable your extensions one at a time to find the offender.
Intuit supports Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari for QuickBooks Online. Internet Explorer is not on that list, and Microsoft retired it in 2022. If you are still signing in through Internet Explorer, that alone explains failed logins and broken screens; move to a current browser before troubleshooting anything else.
Symptoms that trace back to the browser
Three complaints come up again and again, and each is a display fault rather than a data fault:
- The Statement of Changes in Equity opens blank. The report ran; the browser just refused to draw it. A cleared cache or a different browser brings it back.
- A bill number field will not take input, or checks and expenses will not save. Update the browser, clear the cache, and test a private window before assuming your data is damaged.
- The bottom of the reconcile screen is cut off, leaving the buttons that finish the review out of reach. This is a zoom problem. Hold Ctrl and press the minus key to zoom out, or press Ctrl + 0 to reset the zoom.
Sign-in fails with an error
An “Oops, something went wrong” message at sign-in usually has one of four causes. Check them in order:
- An unsupported browser. Internet Explorer fails here every time; use Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
- Stale cookies. Clear cache and site data as described above.
- A pop-up blocker. The sign-in flow opens secondary windows, and a blocker can interrupt it. Disable blockers for the session and try again.
- A service outage. If the first three check out, look at Intuit’s system status page before spending more time on your own setup.
If these steps do not fix it
When the same fault appears in two different browsers after a full cache clear, your machine is probably not the cause. If the status page shows no outage and the fault persists, report it to Intuit itself. The Help menu inside QuickBooks Online opens Intuit’s support. Account, billing, and service problems belong with Intuit, not with us.
E-Tech is an independent QuickBooks data service, and we have no access to your Intuit account or subscription. If the trouble turns out to sit in the data itself, a damaged file or a conversion project, that is the kind of work we handle.
