Why won't QuickBooks Online process credit card payments?

Last reviewed 2026-08-27

When QuickBooks Online will not process a card payment, the cause is usually one of three things. It may be a service outage on Intuit’s side, a browser problem on yours, or a limitation in how the merchant account was set up. Check them in that order and you will usually find the answer quickly.

Is QuickBooks Online down, or is the problem on your end?

Rule out an outage first, because no amount of troubleshooting fixes a service that is temporarily unavailable. The pattern tells you where to look. When card processing, invoicing, online banking, and payroll all fail at once, the fault sits with Intuit’s services rather than your setup.

Confirm your own connection is healthy by loading a couple of ordinary websites in another tab. If those load normally, open Intuit’s service status page. Intuit publishes live incident information there for QuickBooks Online and its related services, and it is the vendor’s page, not ours.

If an incident is listed against QuickBooks Online or payments, stop troubleshooting. Intuit’s engineers are already working on it, and processing resumes when the incident closes. Recheck the same page later instead of changing settings on your side.

What does the “Navigation to webpage was cancelled” error mean?

This error appears when the payment window is blocked before it finishes loading. It is usually a browser or connectivity issue rather than a fault in the merchant account itself.

Work through the browser in this order:

If the payment succeeds in the private window, an extension or a stale cookie was the likely cause. Clear the site data in your normal window and try again. If the error persists across browsers, look once more at the status page in case a new incident has started.

One caution applies to any failed payment. Before re-submitting a charge, check your sales records to see whether it went through, because a transaction can settle even when the confirmation screen fails. Re-submitting blindly is how duplicate charges happen.

Can you move a merchant account between QuickBooks products?

Not always, and the exception catches people out. A QuickBooks Payments merchant account is tied to the product it was created for. QuickBooks Self-Employed cannot link an existing merchant account that was set up for a different QuickBooks product, so that account cannot accept payments inside Self-Employed.

You have two ways forward. Sign up for a new merchant account specifically for QuickBooks Self-Employed, or keep the existing account and use it outside the app, recording the payments manually afterward. The first keeps everything in one place; the second avoids opening a second merchant account.

How long do card payments take to reach your bank?

Card sales do not land in your bank account at the moment of the sale. The processor batches them and deposits the total on a schedule, usually within a few business days of the transaction. Weekends and bank holidays push the date back, and the first deposits after a new account is approved often take longer while verification completes.

A missing deposit is therefore often timing rather than failure. Check the deposit schedule shown in your payments account before treating a delay as a problem, and match each deposit against your card sales for the period. If deposits stop arriving entirely while sales continue, that points to a hold or a verification request, which brings you to Intuit.

When should you contact Intuit about payments?

If the status page shows no incident and the browser checks come up clean, what remains sits inside the merchant account itself. Verification requests, a hold on the account, and funding problems are all invisible from outside, and only Intuit can see them.

That is the point to go to Intuit directly. Its QuickBooks Online support pages cover payments in depth, and an agent there can open the account and see what is blocking it. E-Tech is an independent data service, not Intuit’s support desk, so we have no access to QuickBooks Payments accounts, billing, or subscriptions.
