QuickBooks Self-Employed: subscription, setup, and data management
This guide answers the most common questions about QuickBooks Self-Employed – how to subscribe, manage your account, understand your data, and handle tax categories. QuickBooks Self-Employed is designed for freelancers and independent contractors; it is not the same as QuickBooks Online (Simple Start, Essentials, Plus). If you need features like double‑entry accounting, inventory, or full payroll, see our QuickBooks Online plans.
Getting started
Can I import my Self-Employed data into QuickBooks Online (Simple Start, Essentials, or Plus)?
No. QuickBooks Self-Employed and the other QuickBooks Online products do not share a direct import path. If you need to move to a different QuickBooks Online version, you will have to cancel your QuickBooks Self-Employed subscription (after printing the financial reports you need) and manually re‑enter the data into your new subscription.
My data does not start on January 1 – why?
When you connect your bank and credit card accounts, we pull as much transaction history as the bank allows – typically 30 to 90 days, not a full year. If you need older transactions, check whether your bank offers a CSV download. You can then manually bring that file into QuickBooks Self-Employed.
To download earlier transactions:
- Sign in to your bank’s website.
- Follow their process for exporting transactions; choose CSV format.
- Save the file and then import it into QuickBooks Self-Employed through the Transactions screen.
