Cancel your QuickBooks Online trial or paid subscription
This page covers canceling a QuickBooks Online trial or paid subscription, and what happens to the company file after cancellation. The steps you need depend on one thing: whether you entered payment information when you signed up. If you did not enter a card, the trial cancels itself. If you did, you have to cancel manually before the next billing date.
Trials and paid subscriptions
QuickBooks Online starts as a 30-day trial. You can sign up for the trial without entering payment details. If you enter a credit card to start a paid subscription or to upgrade during the trial, billing begins on the plan you chose. Intuit handles signup, billing, and cancellation for QuickBooks Online.
A trial with no payment details expires on its own. A trial or subscription with payment details continues to bill until someone cancels it. The subscription does not pause by itself, which is why manual cancellation is required once a card is on file.
Cancel a trial without payment details
If you signed up for a free trial and never entered a credit card or other payment method, there is nothing to cancel. At the end of the 30-day period, the trial stops automatically. You will not be charged, and the company file eventually becomes inaccessible. This is the one case where no action is required.
Cancel a trial or subscription with payment details
If you entered payment information during the trial, or if you are currently on a paid subscription, future billing continues until you cancel. The cancellation path in QuickBooks Online is:
- Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
- Select the Settings gear icon in the upper right-hand corner.
- Select Account and settings, or Your Account in some views.
- Select Billing & Subscription from the menu on the left.
- In the Billing info section, select Edit, or Edit billing info.
- Select Cancel subscription or Cancel trial.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the cancellation.
The names of these menu items can change as Intuit updates QuickBooks Online. If a label has moved, look for the billing section inside account settings.
After you cancel
Cancellation does not end your access immediately. It continues until the end of the current billing period. After that date, you lose access to the company file and the data in it. If you change your mind, you can usually reactivate the subscription within a limited window.
About the company file
Canceling does not delete the company file. QuickBooks Online has no direct delete button for company files. The file remains in the system in an inactive state until Intuit eventually removes it. If you created a second company by mistake, you can ignore the unused one after cancellation.
