QB Issue Resolution:
Inventory and posts to COGS when sold. It is major part of production of sellable goods therefore yo cannot expense it until you sell it. Same with directly attributable labor and other charges. If you can allocate so many Kw of electricity to COGS you would but usually can’t, however the consumable filament you know by length or weight how much was used for each item produced.
Example (and I am just picking numbers from thin air) you buy a 300 ft spool for $300, that’s $1/foot. But when you buy it it is inventory. Now you print a widget and use 1.2 ft. You transformed $1.20 of spooled filament into a widget whose inventory value is $1.20 plus any direct costs(maybe one employee for one hour at $30). It sits in inventory as a finished product – still no expense to you, no income yet either. Now you sell it. As it leaves inventory it posts to COGS $1.20
The simplified definition of COGS (cost of goods sold) becomes clear on an annual basis (and on page 2 of a US Schedule C) where COGS = Beginning Inventory +Purchases during the period – Ending inventory
You do not have to calculate COGS for each and every item you can instead perform a periodic inventory adjustment unless you are in a VAT (Value Added Tax) situation where you need to only charge tax on the value added
