Why am I unable to export to Excel in Internet Explorer?

If you are experiencing a problem exporting reports from QuickBooks Online (QBO) to Excel, this is usually caused by an add-on for Internet Explorer. If this doesn’t work there are a few additional steps that can resolve the problem.

Be aware that QuickBooks Online isn’t supported in the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer.

1st – Disable the add-on from Symantec:

Open Internet Explorer.
Go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
Click on the Program tab and then the Manage Add-ons button.
In the Show drop down list, select “Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer”.
Click to highlight the Add-on in the list named Norton Confidential or Norton Toolbar.
Below the list of Add-ons, in the Settings section, click the Disable radio button.
Click Ok.
Close all open Internet Explorer windows.

2nd – Close everything except QBO and Excel (have Excel open with no open document) and see if that will work (it may be a resource issue on your computer which may need to have Excel open when doing the export).

3rd – Clear your browser’s cache and reboot your computer. See our related KnowledgeBase article 1038 – How do I clear the temporary Internet files/cache?

4th – If you are getting the error message “The_associated_helper_application_does_not_exist” when trying to export to Excel 2007, you will need to change a setting:

Open Excel 2007.
Click the Excel logo in the upper-left corner of the Excel window, then click the Excel Options button.
Click Advanced.
Scroll down to the General section.
Click to clear the box labeled Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE).
Click OK, then close Excel.
Try to export the QuickBooks Online report again.
