Here is a real world example:
In an architectural design firm, you invoice for Design Services and Expenses (such as engineering, site survey, blueprint copies, delivery, etc). You cannot Lien the property for unpaid Expenses, but you can Lien the Property for unpaid services. You never put All of this on one invoice, for that reason. That way, a partial payment of underpayment is applied to Expenses, and then you lien the property for payment of Services.
So, it might matter, and it helps to understand this.
